On a hot, humid afternoon in East Rutherford, the Metrostars and Kansas City Wizards fought to a 0-0 draw today at Giants Stadium. This is the second draw on the trot for the Metros, after Steve Jolley’s last gasp goal in Naperville on Saturday gave the team a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire.
Having played 18 matches, the Metros are tied on points with Chicago at 29. However, the Fire have a game in hand and a +9 goal differential (the Metros’ is +4.) All this, plus the sudden improvement in play by the DC Scum means it’s still quite the uphill climb for the Imperials to clinch the conference title this year. Let’s hope they have it in them.

Perhaps the two biggest signings of the off-season occured today when captain Patrick Vieira and fellow Frenchman Robert Pires both agreed to new terms with AFC.
Paddy will be staying with the club until 2007, while Super Bob’s contract runs until 2006.

Tim Howard out-duels Jens Lehmann as ManUre win the FA Community shield, 4-3 on penalties.Thierry Henry scored on a brilliant free kick to pull Arsenal even after twenty minutes of the first half. ManUre had gone ahead a few minutes earlier from a Silvestre header as the result of a corner. In fact, all of the scoring in today’s game came from dead-ball situations.
Francis Jeffers did nothing to help his standing at Arsenal, instead, he was sent off in the 75th minute after lashing out at Phillip Neville.
Still considered part of the pre-season, extra time is not used in the Community Shield, so with the score still 1-1 at the end of ninety minutes, the match moved to penalty kicks straight away.
Jens Lehmann made an absolutely beautiful save from Ruud Van Nistle-dive’s penalty shot, but alas it would be the only save he would make. Arsenal made it too easy for Tim Howard, with both saves by the American being made on shots low to the ground.
Well, that’s it for the pre-season, now on to the games that matter. First up for Arsenal are Everton at Highbury on Saturday.
