Man drops cell phone in train toilet, jams arm

NEW YORK (Reuters) — Cell phone users have been known to complain about poor service, but one New York man’s mobile literally went down the toilet.
The man was on a suburban train from Grand Central Station on Wednesday night when he went to the bathroom to make a phone call, dropped the phone into the toilet bowl and then his hand and arm became stuck trying to retrieve it, officials said.
Metro-North Railroad staff could not help the man, so they stopped the train and called police officers and firefighters to extricate him, a process that took 90 minutes using “jaws of life” rescue equipment.
“The toilets are made of aluminum so I imagine he was down on hands and knees with his shirt rolled up and hand and arm down inside, trying to flush out his cell phone,” said Jim Cameron of the Connecticut Metro-North commuter council.
He said that because of the design of the train toilet, the mobile probably ended up in a chemical holding tank.
A spokesman for the railroad that serves the northern suburbs of New York and Connecticut identified the man as Edwin Gallard, 41, of New York, who suffered a minor injury to his arm as firefighters cut the toilet apart.
The track was closed and thousands of commuters were delayed during the evening rush hour.
The phone has not yet been recovered.

Arsenal will face Premiership new-comers Wolverhampton Wanderers, AKA “Wolves,” at Highbury on Tuesday, December 2nd at a time to be determined (more than likely it’ll be 2:45 PM ET.) Arsenal advanced to the fourth round of the knockout competition formerly known as the “League Cup” after overcoming First Division side Rotherham via penalties 9-8 last Tuesday at Highbury. The Gunners fielded a team of youngsters and reserve team members, giving the first-teamers a chance to rest after the disappointing trip to the Ukraine, and the tough match at Charlton on Sunday.

From BBC News:Arsenal 1-1 Rotherham
(Arsenal win 9-8 on penalties after extra-time)

Arsenal survived a major scare to go through to the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a penalty-shootout victory over brave Rotherham.
The Gunners eventually triumphed 9-8 on penalties against the Division One side after the score ended 1-1 after 120 minutes at Highbury.
The Gunners - fielding a virtual second string - took the lead after 11 minutes through young French striker Jeremie Aliadiere.
But Rotherham fought back and striker Darren Byfield stunned the home crowd by heading home an equaliser in the 90th minute.
After a sensational shoot-out in which each side took 11 penalties, it was the Premiership team who held their nerve as Sylvain Wiltord scored his second spot-kick after Chris Swailes had seen his effort saved.
With Arsene Wenger resting all of those who started last Sunday’s Premiership game at Charlton, he fielded an experimental line-up including four debutants.
Indeed, Spanish Under-17 international Francesc Fabregas - known Cesc - became the youngest player to represent the club at the tender age of just 16 years and 177 days.
But it was the experienced French international Sylvain Wiltord, who provided the touch of class which opened up Rotherham’s defence.
His neat turn foxed the visitors back four and Kanu was just as composed as he slipped the ball sideways to the lurking figure of Aliadiere, who converted with a minimum of fuss.
Back came the determined visitors, with Stack frustrating them as he rushed from his line to block at the feet of Byfield after the striker had burst clear.
Arsenal appeared to be home and dry but the visitors refused to give up, and with 35 seconds of normal time remaining, Byfield powered home Chris Sedgewick’s cross to send the tie into extra-time.
Rotherham’s task was magnified 11 minutes into extra time as goalkeeper Mike Pollitt was sent off for deliberate handball just outside his penalty area.
Substitute keeper Gary Montgomery made a stunning save to deny Wiltord before the game went to penalties.
Wiltord’s miss was matched by John Mullin and the sides traded successful kicks before Swailes saw his saved and Wiltord made no mistake the second time around to secure victory for Arsenal.

Next match: Away to Leeds, Saturday @ 10 AM ET. The match will be televised two hours later at Noon ET on Saturday on Fox Sports World. It will be re-broadcast on regional Fox Sports Nets throughout the week, including Comcast Mid-Atlantic at 1PM on Wednesday the 5th.

Giants come up huge, knock Vikes from ranks of unbeaten
Kerry Collins threw for 375 yards and two touchdowns - both to Ike Hilliard, and Tiki Barber rushed for 75 yards and a TD as the G-men got a very important win in the hostile territory of the Metrodome against the Vikings.
The Vikings were previously undefeated this season, and may have been guilty of looking past the struggling Giants to their upcoming clash against division rivals Green Bay next week. The win puts the Giants record at 3-4, with a chance to climb back to .500 against the equally struggling Jets in what promises to be a heck of a game.
