Arsenal 5 - 3 Middlesbrough

What a match! Arsenal completed a second half comeback from 3-1 down by scoring three goals in a matter of ten minutes! Thierry Henry scored twice, and Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Jose Antonio Reyes also each contributed to the talley. The win helped the Gunners equal the mark of 42 league games without defeat set back in the ’70s by Nottingham Forest. A win or draw at Highbury against Blackburn on Wednesday, and yet another record will belong to this phenomenal Arsenal squad.

With five goals being scored, it’s obvious that the offense was on display in full effect. However, looking at the other side of the scoreline causes one to raise the proverbial eyebrow.

Pascal Cygan was caught woefully out of position, allowing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to score ‘Boro’s second goal. Sol Campbell can’t come back from injury soon enough.

BBC America to air Office Holiday Specials (in October?)

BBC America’s “The Office,” a 2003 Golden Globe winner, and the funniest British import since “Father Ted,” went off the air after only two seasons, (or series as they’re known in the UK). Fortunately, we haven’t heard the last from the “chilled-out entertainer” himself, David Brent, and the rest of the staff at Wernham Hogg. BBC America announced today that they will be airing the two holiday specials that aired in the UK the past two Decembers here in the States sometime in October. No specific dates have been released, but all indications are that many more laughs are in store.

UPDATE 8/24 - According to Amazon.com, the special episodes will be released on DVD Nov 16. I guess that explains the October premiere timeframe.

HEADS UP SCOTTY!

Spider-Man 2 comes to DVD November 30th.

Exactly five months after its’ release in theaters, the summer’s biggest movie will make its’ DVD debut. It looks to be a great set, including 10 hours of bonus footage. All cinephiles/audiophiles take note: there will be a seperate DTS edition coming out that day as well. (That’s the one for me!)

Official: Vertigo single released in Sept, album to follow in November

Multiple press reports today indicate that U2 have officially confirmed that the first single from their as of yet untitiled new album will be released on September 24. The song is named, “Vertigo,” and a video for it will follow sometime in October. The album itself, rumored to be called “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” will hit shelves November 23.

WOO HOO!

Carolina Panthers 27 - NY Giants 20

Normally I wouldn’t bother typing anything about a pre-season NFL game. They’re usually boring, useless displays, lasting several hours too long. Well, last night’s game between the Giants and the Panthers was no exception, apart from one interesting tidbit.

Eli Manning started at quarterback. So, I watched. He was…ok. Well, he was a bit more than ok. In fact, he was better than former NFL and Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner. But then, that’s not saying much. Or is it?

US Leaves it late, draw with Jamaica in Kingston

Brian Ching scored in the 89th minute to bring the US level, and preserve their unbeaten record against Jamaica, in last night’s opening match of the semi-final round of World Cup Qualifying.

The Jamaican crowd was raucous, and with good reason, as the “Reggae Boyz” controlled much of the play throughout the first half. Despite their dominance, the match remained scoreless at half-time.

In the second half, the US began to assert themselves, getting several chances in the opening minutes. However, against the run of play, Jamaica earned a corner-kick, which they converted when Brian McBride lost his mark, allowing a free header on goal, which bounced past a flailing Kasey Keller.

In the substitution of the night, McBride was taken off for Brian Ching a few minutes later. The change was immediately noticeable. Ching became the target man for many US crosses into the box, and he missed a few excellent chances, leaving many to think that a loss was on the cards.

Finally, in the 89th minute, Ching broke Jamaican hearts by smashing home a loose ball in the box, giving the US a draw they most likely didn’t deserve.
