On a whim, Brian entered Red Card Ale into the American Homebrewers Association’s Annual National Homebrew Competition. We hadn’t even tasted it when he sent it, because the deadline for submissions was a whole week before the beer would be ready. The first round competition took place this past weekend, so we knew the beer would be okay in time.
Brian warned me not to get my hopes up, as he had entered several beers in the past, and had never had any advance past the first round. This year he submitted three beers, and for the first time, one advanced. Can you believe, it was…..

Red Card Ale?!?!?!?!
Beginner’s luck indeed.
We came in 3rd place in the Eastern Regional in the Scottish and Irish Ales category:
9 Scottish and Irish Ale
Max Score: 43.5
Min Score: 19
Avg Score: 30.5
# of Entries: 22
1st - 9e Matt Chappel of Independence, OH
2nd - 9e Lenny Lancki of North Olmsted, OH, Society of Akron Area Zymurgists (SAAZ)

Yeah, baby!
The second round takes place in Baltimore during the AHA National Homebrewers Conference from June 16-18. Brian was already planning on going, and now it looks like I might too.
Heady times indeed here at AOM.
Have you been booked?
