Trapped!

The freakiest thing happened to me this morning; I got locked in my own bathroom! I live alone, so I rarely close the bathroom door all the way, but for some reason I did today. Big mistake.

I had just taken a shower while getting ready for work when I discovered that I was trapped. The handle would spin, but there was no traction, the latch was not moving. I tried leaning on the knob, but didn’t want to break it or the door. I searched for something in the bathroom I could use as a tool. I settled on a pair of scissors from the medicine cabinet.

I tried wedging the scissors in between the door jam and the door. They were too thick. I couldn’t find anything else worthwhile. I couldn’t call for help, because my phone was out in the living room.

Thankfully, there was another exit.

In my bathroom is a door that leads into my walk-in closet. For reasons I was never privy to (although theories abound, among them hydroponic pot growing), the previous resident had put a chain on the door on the closet side, one that I had never bothered removing. When I moved in, I decided that I wasn’t going to use that door, so I piled all sorts of boxes up against it, ostensibly using it as an extra part of the wall.

Deciding that I had no other choice, I pushed against the closet door. After a few moments, the chain broke away from the wall, but I was still getting resistance from the boxes. I pushed again, this time leaning with much more gusto. The boxes began to tumble down, and the door finally opened wide enough for me to squeeze through. I was free!

I stumbled over the collapsed boxes and made my way out of the closet into my bedroom. I immediately checked the bathroom door. It opened! Apparently the problem only exists when trying to open the door from inside the bathroom.

I tried fixing the door knob myself, but it looks like it’s broken beyond repair and will need to be replaced.

Adventures of Mike indeed!

Last night I went to see U2 for the second time in eight days. This time I went with Scott, Stephanie and Wooly. A few slight changes to the setlist aside, the show was pretty much the same as last Saturday’s, meaning it was damn good. “Gloria” was great to hear, as was “With or Without You.” My only complaint is that I still didn’t get the “Bad” I was hoping for. Perhaps I’ll get one in October.

Three interesting things about last night not directly related to the music:

First, due to Wooly getting stuck in Baltimore after the Phils v O’s game, we didn’t get on the road until 7:45 PM. We ended up getting in to Philly around 8:20PM, and there was hardly any traffic. It was a bit eerie. Then, when I pulled into the lot at Lincoln Financial Field, there was no one there to take our money. We got to park for free!

The second noteworthy occurance took place just before the show began. Scott and Stephanie headed up to the seats, while I hung out on the first level waiting for Wooly to get back from the bathroom. I wasn’t sure which bathroom he’d chosen, so I decided the best bet was to meet him at the foot of the escalator. I was standing there for a few moments when a pretty girl walked up to me. She held cheese fries in her left hand and a beer in her right. “Are you going up?” she asked. I replied, “Eventually, I’m waiting on my buddy.” She continued, “Would you mind riding up the escalator with me? I’ve had a bit to drink, and I’m too dizzy to ride up and hold my beer and fries.” Always one to help a damsel in distress, I took her beer, and hopped on the escalator with her. Her name was Tammy, and she ended up hugging me the entire way up to the 200 level. When we reached the top she said, “Thank you for being such a gentleman.” She kissed my cheek, said “Have a great show!” and then disappeared into the crowd. Ahh, drunk girls. :)

Lastly, on the way out, some English girls saw my Arsenal jersey and one was wrinkling her nose. Her friend said, “But they beat United.” Not missing a beat, Wooly and I broke into song, “Paddy Vieira! Paddy Vieira! Who put the ball in the Man U net? Paddy Vieira!”

Good times indeed. I brought my digital camera last night, and despite being behind the stage, was able to get some pretty cool looking shots. Check them out here.

Red Card does it again!

Heard from Brian over the weekend, and he had some absolutely amazing news to share…

This is taken from his website:

“This year’s BUZZ OFF” had 254 entries and was held at Iron Hill West Chester. I did not steart or anything, but Karen & I did go up to hear the awards announcements at 4:00. They were running behind and finally started to announce the awards around 5:30 or so.

Here’s what happened:

I entered 4 beers in this competition. I entered the ECPA in the American Amber category, the MacRae in the Old Ale category, the Red Card Ale in the Irish Red category, and the Honey pale Ale in the Specialty Beer category. Fortunately, two of my beers placed!! The ECPA got a 3rd Place in its category and the Red Card Ale got a 1st Place in its category!! And as if that were not enough, the Red Card Ale then surprised me once again by winning BEST OF SHOW!! Amazed, . . . I honestly thought the MacRae and the Honey Pale Ale had stronger potential than the flip side, goes to show what I know.

Here are all the results: 2005 BUZZ OFF Results

And because of the Red Card Ale’s 1st Place victory, it get’s an invitation to the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB) this year! The BUZZ OFF is a qualifing event for the MCAB. There are about 10 qualifing events from around the country, and if you get a 1st Place in any of the categories, that beer moves on to this invitation only national competition. So this will be the second national competition the Red Card Ale will be entered in just this year! Here is the MCAB webite, it looks as if it has not been updated from last year, so stay tuned for an updated site: MCAB site

Not only did all of this happen at the BUZZ OFF yesterday, but I also recieved all my information for the National Homebrew Competition in the mail yesterday. And, not only does the Red Card Ale go on to the second (and final) round, but the MacRae also will be going to the second round because of a mistake the judges made while judging, couldn’t really ask for more. So, all in all it was a good homebrew day, and I didn’t even make beer! “

This is absolutley amazing news, and my only regret is that I don’t have any more Red Card to share, or to drink myself for that matter! Perhaps another batch is in order…
