The Yankees made arguably the biggest trade of the season so far, obtaining star outfielder Bobby Abreu and starting pitcher Corey Lidle from the Phillies in exchange for four minor-leaguers.
As a Yankee fan, I’m excited that this trade addresses two big issues - the outfield, and the back-end of the pitching rotation. As someone who lives near Philadelphia, and pulls for the Phils in the NL, I have to shake my head. I know that getting rid of Abreu saves the Phils $37 million over the next two seasons, but the guy was a consistent offensive contributor, and the guy that really needs to go in Philadelphia is Pat Burrell.
Anyway, the Yanks also picked up Craig Wilson from the Pirates in exchange for Shawn Chacon this afternoon. Chacon came over in a mid-season trade from the Rockies last year, and helped the Yanks win the AL East with some solid performances. This year, he struggled to replicate those performances, so my feeling is that is this another positive move by Brian Cashman.
