Arsenal 2 - 0 Bolton

Tomas Rosicky’s beautiful flicked goal finished an amazing run of play by the Gunners and sealed the victory ten minutes from time over a very negative Bolton side at the Grove this afternoon.

It was tough going for nearly seventy minutes, until Kolo Toure’s thunderous free kick ripped through the wall into the bottom corner past a diving Jussi Jesskalinin.

Rosicky and Theo Walcott had come on as subs shortly after the hour-mark, and both made their presences felt immediately. You could just see Arsenal’s attacks becoming more focused. It wasn’t for lack of opportunity though, as Bolton hardly left their own half the entire game, preferring to foul, time-waste, etc.

U2 to commemorate 20th anniversary of The Joshua Tree

Dave alerted me to this little nugget of news coming from Dublin yesterday:

Rolling Stone reports:

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Joshua Tree, Irish rockers/builders of tall towers U2 will reissue their epic 1987 album in multiple formats on November 20th. The remastered album will be available as a single disc, double disc, double disc/single DVD, and double vinyl. The second disc will likely feature demos, alternate takes, and B-sides from the Brian Eno-produced sessions. The DVD will feature a July 4th, 1987 concert as well as the documentary Outside, It’s America.

The Joshua Tree is one of my favorite albums, second only to The Beatles’ Revolver. My CD copy is from the early 90s (upgraded from my 1987 tape), so it’ll be nice to have an improved recording, and the concert DVD is just icing on the cake.

Joe tells George to shove it

Early word out of Tampa is that Joe Torre has rejected the Yankees one-year contract offer. No reason has been given yet, but it’s understood that the offer was $5 million for one season, plus bonuses of $1 million for each round of the playoffs the Yankees won in 2008. I guess that makes Joe the “bad guy” now and makes it easier for Don Mattingly to take over as manager.

As a Yankee fan, I have to say that good for Joe, from a pride/ego sense, but, where does that leave the players? Does Don Mattingly become manager now, or will it be Tony LaRussa?

The fact that he said no to $5 million a year, plus $1 million bonuses for each round of the playoffs allows the Yanks to spin it, and easier to hire Mattingly. Personally, i’d rather they wait on Mattingly, and bring in La Russa for 2 years, then go to Donnie Baseball.

Stay tuned…

Giants 31 - 10 Falcons

The Giants continued their recent run with a 31-10 victory in Atlanta last night on Monday Night Football. Now, the Falcons are a mess, but it’s a team that the Giants should beat, so to get a win so comfortably was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Eli Manning had another good game, but it was Amani Toomer’s night. After no touches last week at all, the veteran receiver caught his first touchdown pass of the season midway through the first quarter. On top of that the Michigan alum caught his 587th pass during the fourth quarter, setting a new all-time Giants franchise record.

Plaxico Burress continues to impress on game days despite limited practice during the week due to his injured ankle. It remains to be seen whether he can keep this up all season, but so far, so good.

Next up are the 49ers at home before heading to London.

Arsenal Insider Interview

Yours truly was asked recently to “sit down” for an interview with Tim Love of Arsenal Insider.

During the interview we discuss how I came to love the Arsenal; Rick Liebling and the formation of Arsenal America; the growth of football/soccer in the United States, and much more.

Check out what Tim promises to be the first of many interviews posted each Friday featuring Gooners from the world over: Arsenal Insider - Arsenal Fans Around the World: Arsenal America

Thanks Tim!

Encore: Akimbo

I had seen the ad for this show in the City Paper, but wasn’t really into going by myself, and quickly forgot about it.  Imagine my surprise then, when Brian texted me the morning of the show offering me a ticket.  We made arrangements to meet at my house before heading to the show, and did just that.  Brian was able to take advantage of the leftover beer that was still in the fridge from Mikeapalooza, which helped take the edge off after a manic drive down from Wilmington.

We headed to show around 8:00, and got there in time to catch opening act, PMG.  They’re a three-piece band from Indiana who play crunching blues in the vein of the Allmans and Govt. Mule.
