November 19th, 2007 — Adventure and Film

Having to make do with no Arsenal the past several days due to the international break, I’ve taken the opportunity to do some damage on my Netflix queue.
On Friday, my roommate and I watched “Flags Of Our Fathers”, the Clint Eastwood film that relates the story of the Marines who hoisted the flag on Iwo Jima back in World War II.
Then on Sunday, we watched “Talk To Me”, starring Don Cheadle as Petey Greene, a ground-breaking DJ on a Washington D.C.-based R&B station back in the late 60s. We followed that up with, “Planet Terror”, Robert Rodriguez’s contribution to the Grindhouse double-feature.
I’d have to say that all three films were good, not great.
“Flags of Our Fathers” had a lot going for it, but there just seemed to be something missing, which I still haven’t been able to put my finger on. I hear that the companion piece, “Letters From Iwo Jima”, which tells the story of the battle from the perspective of the Japanese defending the island, is supposed to be the superior of the two. It just arrived in the mail today, so I look forward to watching it soon.
“Talk To Me” was good, if formulaic. Don Cheadle was excellent as usual.
“Planet Terror” was goofy, if graphic, fun. Basically yet another zombie flick, there was a major sense of humor running through the whole thing, which made it an enjoyable ride.
November 19th, 2007 — New York Giants

Got to see the last three minutes of this game as the FOX NFL coverage started at 4 PM yesterday. It looked like the Giants were going to give the game away, but thanks to two big interceptions, they head back to the Meadowlands with a 7-3 record. The big stories out of this game were the broken leg suffered by Mathias Kiwanuka, and the hamstring injury picked up by Brandon Jacobs. All indications are that Jacobs will be back by Sunday’s game at home against the Vikings, but Kiwanuka looks all but done for the season.
November 13th, 2007 — Arsenal FC

Alexander Hleb’s goal in the 78th minute sealed the points for the Gunners as Arsenal grabbed a key away win over Reading last night. Reading played with ten men behind the ball for about 87 minutes last night, and as such, Arsenal found it a bit difficult to break them down at first. Emmanuel Adebayor saw an early effort go off the post, but it was Mathieu Flamini who opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 44th minute.
Adebayor nearly had two goals in quick succession, the first a 52nd minute strike to make the score 2-0, and the second a few moments later that was wrongly called for offside. The third goal did come, from Alex Hleb to make the score 3-0 with twelve minutes left.
Reading pulled one back as Nicky Shorey bundled in a rebound from a free-kick with about three minutes left to make the final 3-1.
So, Arsenal go back to the top of the league and now get a twelve day break. I can already begin to feel the DTs….
November 11th, 2007 — New York Giants

“Trouble ahead, oh, Eli in red!”
When will the Giants learn that they they’ll never win anything wearing those stupid red jerseys. Anyway, a great way to start off the second half of the season, by losing at home to the Cowboys. Woo hoo! Jeremy Shockey had a big game, but the Cowboys completely shut down the passing game, as Burress and Toomer had quiet afternoons. On the other side of the ball, the defense did a better job of stopping Jason Whitten, but Terrell Owens had yet another multi-touchdown game against the G-men.
So, 6-3 now, and it’s off to Detroit to play the Lions. The Lions don’t suck as much as they used to, so it’ll be no easy trip. Was yesterday just a bump on the road to the playoffs, or is a repeat of last season’s second-half collapse in the cards?
November 8th, 2007 — Adventure

Was out all day at a divisional meeting yesterday - free booze at the end so it was 1-1 going into stoppage time. At the happy hour, I ended up chatting to this girl who looks like Lisa Loeb, digs indie rock, and spent part of last year working in London and became a Gooner in the process. 2-1 me now, and practically no time left. I’m thinking, “Ref, blow the whistle!”. Then fate scored an equalizier right at the death: She’s married.
November 8th, 2007 — Arsenal FC

I missed yesterday’s yawn-fest due to a huge divisional meeting we had at the office. I was complaining at the time, but I suppose I came out ahead, considering there were free drinks at the end of the meeting.
Arsene overhauled the starting eleven, and Slavia were quite determined to give a better account of themselves after the 7-0 drubbing of a fortnight ago. All indications are that a point a piece was a fair result. Having now clinched qualification, the Gunners can concentrate on the Premiership and the upcoming journey to Reading on Monday. Kickoff is 3 PM ET, and the match will be shown live here in the States on Setanta USA.
